The humble Halloween pumpkin

LUCA & LUCA pumpkin picking tips

It’s nearly Halloween, which means the vegetable counter in your local grocery store is likely to become taken over by a distinctive orange vegetable. Yes, it’s pumpkin time!

Whether you believe ‘jack-o-lanterns’ ward off evil spirits or just love the thrill of finding and carving the perfect pumpkin, ‘pumpkin picking’ is a great way to share some outdoor time with your kids this October and a fun alternative buying in a supermarket. Long popular in the States it’s now starting to gain in popularity in the UK and is an ideal half-term activity. Pumpkin patches can be a little hard to find, but more and more are beginning to emerge throughout the country, including some not too far from central London.

Many farms have extra activities like soft play or tractor rides to keep your children entertained or should the weather take a turn for the worse.

Here’s LUCA & LUCA's pick of the best…

Crockford Bridge Farm, Addlestone, Surrey

Probably the closest farm to London and free entry. There’s a huge selection of pumpkins and small outdoor and indoor play areas.

Secretts Farm – Milford, Surrey

Tractor and trailer rides to the Pumpkin Field run daily from 26-31 October for £1 per person

Marsh Farm, Essex

Another close option for those living in London, Marsh Farm is actually open on Halloween itself and is holding a festival from 19-31 October.

Foxes Farm – Basildon or Colchester, Essex

Literally loads of pumpkins to choose from – just bring your wellies!

The Pop-Up Farm – St Albans, Hertfordshire

Ten acres full of pumpkins, hot chocolate, a bale maze and lots of farming facts for kids about pumpkins. Keep an eye out for flood notices though!

Cammas Hall, Hertfordshire

Simply a great place for Londoners to pick pumpkins. Remember to bring strong bags if you plan to pick a few, as there aren’t any available to buy in the farm shop. Open from 4th - 31st October.

Beluncle Farm – Rochester, Kent

Free entry and no booking needed for Beluncle Farm’s patch. There’s loads of car parking too.

The weekend is coming, get picking!!
